Step-by-Step tutorial for Subtle

Added by Justin Domingue about 12 years ago

Hi,

I was wondering if there was a step-by-step tutorial for subtle. I read the wiki, but it is too much about theory and not for beginners. For example, they say how to modify the style; they give code, but they simply don't say where to put that code!

Thanks

Hey,

generally the wiki is just a place to find bits of information and not a book. And after all, the best place to find information about the config - is the config.

If you volunteer to write such a text, feel free, it is a wiki. I just don't have the time for that and I am probably not a good writer, when you think that the explanations in the wiki are that bad.

Sorry if I was rude, I didn't mean to harm you. I think the wiki is well written. However, I also think it is more targeted to intermediate to advanced users. For me who has never used subtle, it is hard to find the information I need to quickly hook myself to the wm. What I was asking for was simply a little start-up guide where you explained things briefly. A more pragmatic tutorial. Then if I want to know more about clients or gravities, I can read the more advanced topics. To compare, Wmii offers a small introduction tutorial when you first open the wm. the tutorial only gives you the key bindings and features of the wm.

I could for sure write that step by step guide, but for that I will need to actually learn with it - play with it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

BTW, I really like subtle's features, especially Ruby :)

No need to apologize, I am just used to people telling me the wiki is crap etc. and then refuse to update the wiki. ;)

I tried exactly that on the Usage page, but haven't read it for quite a while. Also it is difficult for me as developer to explain things that are obvious for me.

When you are stuck just join the channel on freenode and ask and I would appreciate any improvement of the wiki.

Well, I can't update the wiki if I don't even understand subtle...

I am using a netbook. A lot of the keybindings aren't working by default (i.e. gravities). I changed my keybindings as said in the FAQ, but it didn't work... Subtle doesn't seem to have updated the bindings!

Some keys like the numpad are difficult on a netbook/laptop, but the default config suggests alternate keys for that.

Did you reload the config aferwards and did you edit the correct file?

I put the subtle.rb file in .config/ instead of .config/subtle/.

Let me switch back to subtle and verify.

Do you prefer if I ask my question in the forum or in the IRC?

IRC is better, less distracting and more interative, because I am working on subtle. ;)

Couldn't the forum posts be useful to some beginners?

Sure, but they usually barely read the wiki pages so I don't expect that they read the forum.
