The extension works - it's just lacking useful stuff:
irb(main):001:0> require "subtlext"
=> true
irb(main):002:0> s = Subtle.new(":0")
Connection open
=> #<Subtle:0xb7d7a46c>
irb(main):003:0> s.version
=> "0.8.655"
